Well smart
Article Abstract:
The petrochemical industry's operations depend on drilling at ever increasing depths. Drilling conditions thus become more difficult. Researchers in the department of mechanical engineering at University College London are looking at the problem of drill string failure, by improving methods for predicting the fatigue life of drilling components, and ensuring that when fatigue failure does begin to occur, drill operators can shut down the equipment, so that the entire drill string can be recovered.

Old king coal
Article Abstract:
The negative environmental implications of using coal for new power generation stations in the UK has resulted in the shift to pulverized fuel combustion. However, the process produces a fine ash dust which has yet to be filtered out of the flue gases. Huge energy requirements in China and India have resulted in the development of fluidized-bed combustion technology which simultaneously solves the major pollution problems.

Defining the future
Article Abstract:
Engineering research and creativity can be found in abundance in UK but converting them into profitable business ventures is not that easy. A usual fault found in research activities is that they tend to focus on fundamental principles instead of practical applications. The government has sponsored a competition called 'Realising Our Potential Awards' to encourage research focusing on business applications.
