Will UV lasers beat the blues
Article Abstract:
Researchers attending the Apr 1997 Materials Research Society reported the development of a chip-based laser that generates light with the shortest wavelength yet achieved. The laser may eventually be used to read a new type of CD and CD-ROM that holds far more information than those currently available.

Laser is a a guiding light for atoms
Article Abstract:
Researchers led by Dana Z. Anderson, Carl Wieman and Eric Cornell have used laser beams to guide rubidium atoms through a hollow optic fiber. The stream of atoms could be used by nanotechnologists to place atoms at precise locations on surfaces. Other potential applications are discussed.
