General Electric researchers developed halogen lamps in the 1950s. Rather than filling a bulb with inert gas, they used iodine gas, and discovered that the metal particles that had evaporated from the tungsten filament cycled back to the filament, 'healing it.'

An optical fiber system, with about 10 billion digital bits per second transmission rate, has been described. The optical system, which proves useful in transferring thousands of telephone calls, consists of hair-thin fibers of high-purity silica glass.
