From genes to genome biology
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the Genome Mapping and Sequencing Meeting at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory revealed new strategies which help them to identify single genes and to study gene interactions. Includes discussion of genetic footprinting, genomic mismatch scanning, and silicon genotyping chips.

Chemical shackles for genes; in both plant and animals, methyl group addition to DNA is proving necessary for normal development, apparently because it helps shut down genes
Article Abstract:
Researchers have determined that methylation is required for plant and animal development. Methylation, a chemical modification in which a methyl group is attached to specific portions of DNA, functions to turn off specific genes so that their code cannot be used during development.
