Yankee Stadium falling down?
Article Abstract:
The failure of an 18-in steel roller joint above section 20 of the Yankee Stadium in Apr 1998 showed that it was unique in the park and that the stadium has not been inspected for structural integrity for 19 years. The joint is part of the original design and was intended to absorb vibrations in the structure. A renovation made in 1973 removed the supporting columns, which were replaced by cables to allow more degrees of freedom. The collapse renewed the initiative to scout for a new home for the New York Yankees in other parts of the city.
