Consistency of physicians' legal standard and personal judgments of competency in patients with Alzheimer's disease

The Capacity to Consent to Treatment Instrument may help doctors decide whether a patient with Alzheimer's disease is competent to understand and consent to treatment. This instrument presents the legal standards that have been developed to make such assessments.

Doctors should consider knowledge, verbal recall, and reasoning ability when determining whether a patient with Alzheimer's disease is competent to understand and consent to treatment. This was the conclusion of researchers who asked five doctors to use the Capacity to Consent to Treatment Instrument on 21 patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Self- and informant report of financial abilities in patients with Alzheimer's disease: reliable and valid?
Article Abstract:
A study conducted to analyze the reports by patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and their caregivers regarding the patients' premorbid and current financial abilities is presented. The findings indicated that the patients with AD overestimate their financial abilities in comparison with the reports of their family caregivers, and also reveals the reliability and accuracy of self- and informant reports of financial abilities.
