Delirium: Still searching for risk factors and effective preventive measures
Article Abstract:
Risk factors and effective preventive measures for delirium have been investigated with a literature search. Outcomes found in prospective studies are pressure ulcers, falls, long-term cognitive deficits, functional impairment and extended length of stay. Prevention requires ability to identify specific patients at risk for delirium and to measure the relative contribution of the various risk factors.

Evaluating an incontinence intervention in nursing home residents
Article Abstract:
Findings of a recent study are interesting, but misinterpretation is a matter of concern since th e intervention, which was labor-intensive, was not found to be of economic significance for nursing homes (NHs) . It is inappropriate to have cost savings as the criterion for adoption . Th e q uality-adjusted life year (QALY ) model is the preferred health effects metric. Demographics and Medicaid, Medicare, and the Department of Veterans Affairs and their resources and motivations, as well as those of NHs, are discussed. Incontinence statistics for NHs are included.
