Dying with end stage liver disease with cirrhosis: insights from SUPPORT
Article Abstract:
Dying with end stage liver disease with cirrhosis (ESLDC) has been investigated relative to patterns of care and end-of-life treatment preferences in the Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatment (SUPPORT). Subjects in the prospective cohort study at five US teaching hospitals numbered 575. It was found that they were young, likely to be male and often were from a low-income group. Pain levels were high, like those for patients with lung and colon cancer. More attention to symptom relief and better home care would be helpful, as would advanced care planning.

Insights about dying from the SUPPORT project
Article Abstract:
Insights into dying from the Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatment (SUPPORT) project are discussed. Reviewing published study reports has led to the conclusion that they study, though intended to look into decision making affecting the seriously ill patient, brought to light many other aspects of the course of life as it approaches its end. Topics include demographics, epidemiology, symptoms, prognoses, family impact and costs.
