Pain and suffering in seriously ill hospitalized patients
Article Abstract:
Pain and suffering have been studied in seriously ill hospitalized patients. An observational cohort and randomized controlled trial was carried out. a surprising finding was that pain was reported by patients in nine of nine disease categories under consideration, even in those not usually associated with pain. It was found that control of pain and other symptoms is still an important medical and ethical issue. Routine monitoring of pain and other symptoms should be linked to treatment approaches targeted to symptom combinations and tested to alleviate concerns about side effects.

Alternative medicine use in older Americans
Article Abstract:
Data collected in a nationally representative, random, telephone survey of adults older than 64 has been used to measure use of conventional medical services and use of 20 alternative medicine therapies in the most recent 12 months. It was found that 30% of the group used alternative medicine and 19% visited an alternative medicine provider in the year preceding the survey. Chiropractic and herbs were the most commonly used modalities. Physicians should ask patients about use of alternative medicine and should specifically ask about chiropractic and herbal medicine use.
