Listening to discourse in distracting settings: The effects of aging
Article Abstract:
Younger and older adults were found not to differ with regard to memory for certain details when listening to discourse in a quiet or moderate level of noise. However older adults did not recall so much detail, either in quiet or noise, when no adjustments were made to compensate for the poorer hearing of older adults.

Speech comprehension difficulties in older adults: Cognitive slowing or age-related changes in hearing?
Article Abstract:
Speech comprehension declines more rapidly in older adults than in younger adults as speech rate increases, which is usually attributed to a slowing of brain function with age. This Age X Speed interaction reflects the inability of the older adult's auditory system to cope with speed-induced stimulus degradation.

Inhibition and aging: Similarities between younger and older adults as revealed by the processing of unattended auditory information
Article Abstract:
Age-related declines in auditory selective attention have been found in research. Three experiments have been undertaken, where differences in hearing ability were controlled by individual adjustments to stimulus presentation levels. The experiment results indicated that age-related auditory attentional deficits could be due to the perceptual or sensory difficulties of older adults in understanding speech in noise, rather than inhibitory deficits.
