Article Abstract:
Issues concerning ways in which to measure the amount of democracy in society are examined, focusing on classifications that determine, democracy, semi-democracy, and authoritarian political systems. Topics include democratic features such as contested elections and civic participation, and an assessment of 19 Latin American regimes.

The path-dependent approach to understanding development of political regimes in Latin America is examined, focusing on how liberal reforms in the 19th century influenced the divergent political trajectories of Central American countries that continued through the 20th century.
