Cosmopolitanism
Article Abstract:
The central problem troubling the modern concept of cosmopolitanism is whether the world is interconnected enough to generate institutions that have a global regulatory reach and a global form of solidarity that can influence their functioning. Any theory of cosmopolitanism must address questions concerning the cosmopolitan extensiveness of a regulatory power embedded in institutions, as well as the normativity of these institutions.

Democracy became a universally accepted principle by the 1940s, and with the formation of the United Nations, international or planetary democracy was discussed systematically for the first time. Sovereign statehood re-emerged in the 1970s as a key resource in the global emancipatory struggles over recognition of agency and autonomy, and this marked the beginning of world politics proper.
