Internationalization of corporate R&D: a study of Japanese and Swedish corporations
Article Abstract:
A survey of multinational Japanese and Swedish firms reveals that international industrial R&D continues to grow in different industries across the globe. Japanese R&D activities have been observed to rely on supply of information technology. This trend is reflected in Japanese firms' close ties with US universities. As US universities continue to lead in producing highly skilled human resources, these institutions would attain greater influence across the globe. It is also possible that in response to global demand, these universities would become international institutions.

The policy implications of the globalisation of innovation
Article Abstract:
The internationalization of industrial research may be attributed to individual countries' desire to optimize their use of technology, global access to innovations and partnerships among firms in different countries. This increased globalization of R&D has generated greater competition, as well as strategic alliances among firms within and among countries. As these alliances garner greater influence, their continued survival or failure could drastically affect the economy of their home countries. Such a scenario needs to be analyzed carefully by national policymakers.

New concepts and trends in international R&D organization
Article Abstract:
The globalization of industrial R&D has been spearheaded by a handful of multinational firms. These firms can be classified according to their organizational structure and business orientation. Some of them are affiliated with a specific race, while others are known to have been forged from their country of origin. There has also been a tendency for specific industries to aggregate in a specific region primarily due to their need to access highly skilled workers.
