Mapping individual performance over time
Article Abstract:
Cross-sectional research investigating seniority, tenure, and age as they relate to job performance has demonstrated an initial positive linear increase followed by a plateau. Investigations into the stability of performance have demonstrated that individuals change their rank order over time. Taken together, these findings suggest that the curvilinear relationship displayed in the seniority, tenure, and age research is actually made up of many different intraindividual change patterns. Performance data for two samples of professional baseball players were used to investigate these individual change patterns for systematic and meaningful differences. The results demonstrated the importance of studying performance over time at the individual level and that focusing on either mean performance or change in rank order can mask systematic individual patterns of change. A realistic simulation for assessing the relationships among components of rating accuracy
Article Abstract:
Laboratory investigations reveal that components of rating accuracy are often independent of one another and contribute distinct pieces of information. The generalizability of these laboratory results to field settings may be limited by real-life rating dynamics. In this study, the ability to generate performance true scores in realistic settings allows an assessment of the extent of independence of components of rating accuracy under conditions approximating those in field settings. Results obtained under realistic conditions from a sample of 125 subjects were compared with results of a meta-analysis of laboratory results. Overall, the two sets of results are not significantly different; however, some correlations, particularly those involving rating leniency, are lower in the realistic setting than in the laboratory.
