Reply to the remarks by H.M. Abdel-Rahman
Article Abstract:
The criticisms raised by H.M. Abdel-Rahman in his paper, 'Heterogeneity of Labor Market and City Size in an Open Spatial Economy,' are refuted. His assertion that the open city model will yield a system of specialized cities if migrations are self-determining; that is, the workers with a specific skill will migrate to the city where the firm with the same job requirement is located, is valid. However, the focus should be on the growth of the city and not on the agglomeration of different types of firms.

Comments on 'Heterogeneity of labor market and city size in an open spatial economy' by S. Kim
Article Abstract:
Kim's paper on the heterogeneity of labor market and city size in an open spatial economy is criticized in three points. The type of urban land use model should be a closed city model instead of an open city model. In solving for city size, the land market and labor market equations are also questioned. The existence of equilibrium is also doubted since a derivative process to ensure the existence of such is not presented.

When do cities specialize in production?
Article Abstract:
A general equilibrium model of a closed economy consisting of an urban system involved in the production of two final goods is analyzed to shed light on the reasons for diversification or specialization by cities. The equilibrium situation generated is subdivided into two: pure specialization and pure diversification. The likelihood for either of the two equilibrium situations relies on transportation cost determinants.
