Article Abstract:
Approximately 186,000 African Americans served in the US Army during the Civil War, and records documenting such military service in the rest of the 19th century are housed in the National Archives and Records Administration. The Ninth and Tenth Cavalry and the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Infantry were black regiments.

Researching Confederate marines in the Civil War
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning research into the Confederate Marine Corps, which existed during the Civil War, are examined. Topics include the relatively small size of the corps, destruction of its records by Confederate soldiers, and records which were available to historians, such as Confederate personnel records and prisoner of war records.
