State-level treatment outcome studies using administrative databases
Article Abstract:
The significance of state substance dependence administrative databases is discussed. The authors maintain the information contained in the databases could offer insight into the effectiveness of long term treatment outcomes of substance abusers, and also claim that successful completion of treatment tends to reduce societal cost.

A review of temporal effects and outcome predictors in substance abuse treatment studies with long-term follow-ups
Article Abstract:
This article discusses studies conducted on drug and alcohol treatment and the long term effectiveness. The author maintains drug and alcohol abusers show better results while in treatment, but over the long term the positive results begin to diminish, however, results depend on the background of the patient.

Effectiveness of continuing care interventions for substance abusers: implications for the study of long-term treatment effects

An evaluation of research conducted on the effectiveness of continuing care, aftercare following the initial substance abuse treatment, is discussed. The author argues that too few studies have been conducted on continuing care and maintains more research needs to be done before any conclusions are drawn.
