Societal integration and age-standardized suicide rates in 21 developed countries, 1955-1989
Article Abstract:
Suicide rates in 21 developed nations from 1955 to 1989 were influenced mostly by a sociological concept called culture of suicide. This concept argues that societies differ in the extent to which they condone or condemn suicide. In a society where a culture of suicide exists, suicide rates are higher. It follows that among a group of people who condemn the act of suicide, suicide rates are lower. It has also been found out that educational integration reduces female suicide rates, while educational integration does not have an effect on male suicide rates.
