Low-fat and low-calorie versions of favorite family foods are suggested to help children maintain healthy weights. For example, eating a veggie burger on a light roll, instead of a regular fast-food cheeseburger, can eliminate 254 calories and 27 grams of fat from the diet.

A study of 467 10-year-olds showed that children who ate breakfast at home often either skipped the meal or ate junk foods high in sugar. Children who ate at school were better nourished. Parents should keep healthful breakfast foods on hand.
