Teacher Emily Wolk recalls that there was a lot of media interest when she arranged for children to collect data about the speed of cars driving past her school, Pio Pico Elementary School in Santa Ana, CA. She states that the children's reluctance to cross the road outside the school was the starting point for a long-running campaign to improve road safety in the area.
