A preview is presented of the golfing year ahead in 2001 in the United States. Following a remarkable year in 2000, when the profile of the game was significantly increased and Tiger Woods dominated, 2001 sees controversy in the form of the scheduling of tournaments.

The big event

Crowds at the Ryder Cup grew from less than 1,000 people in 1983 to about 30,000 in 1995, but the tournament still is not as prestigious as the major championships. However, the tournament offers the players intense competition and enjoyment.
