The prairie chicken, or pinnated grouse, is the most elusive of grouse, and will fly for miles and hide seemingly nowhere. A guide trip hunting pinnates in the wide-open plains of Missouri with an experienced bird dog and a puppy is related.

A pheasant hunt in Montana is described. There was difficulty in an area of cattails because the dog's pausing to point gave the pheasants time to tunnel through the cattails and get away, but there was greater success in a grassy area.

An upland bird hunter recalls an expedition in Arizona. The target was the Mearns quail, a native of the US, which is the scarcest quail that can be hunted. It makes a great trophy and is very edible.
