Black bears are normally found along the mountainsides of US national forest areas. In Montana, the best places to go hunting include Kootenai National Forest and Flathead National Forest. Bear hunters can narrow their search for bears by using hiking trails or roads not open to motorized vehicles.

A study of mule deer behavior reveals that the patterns of the animal change once they realize hunting season will soon arrive. Deer that stayed in thickets in one area survived better than those who traveled. Hunting techniques based on the behavior are described.
