The bear is a solitary animal, leaving its mother after two to four years. It has an excellent sense of smell and tries to avoid people, although a sow can be a fierce protector of its young. There is still little information on the lives of bears.

Fifty-five percent of respondents to a survey of 4,204 readers said that hunting should be allowed in national parks. Most proponents felt that hunting should be limited. Opponents cited the dangers to hikers and environmental aspects.
