Sorority sisters: in all-girl exhibitions, do you admire the art or bond with women in it?
Article Abstract:
The current Art Institute of Chicago exhibit `Julia Margaret Cameron's Women' of images by the renowned photographer raises questions about shows that are by and about only women. These photographs are from the 1860s, but do little to reflect the role that women played in the 19th century or what contributions they made to American society. Her women subjects served more as props than as the central themes of her work.
