A sailor recounts the travails of Anguilla traditional boat racing during the annual August series in 1996. Aboard the racing sloop De Tree, he felt alternately exhilarated, frightened and excited as the boat left the port, was hit by a gust at one point and finally made it fifth among 12 boats.

The EF Language is one of the competing boats in the prestigious Whitbread Round-the-World international sailing race. The ship's crew appears to be on track to be the overall winner of the nine-leg sailing race even as they soon negotiate the gruelling 5th leg of the race in the Southern Ocean.
