Boat enthusiasts must know when to adhere to a rule and the instances where rule bending is acceptable. A regulation stating when boating rules can be bent is contained in the Coast Guard's General Prudential Rule which allows non-compliance in the event of an immediate danger.

US Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety Chief Capt Michael Holmes proposes a regulation that will put a 65 mph speed cap to all personal watercrafts. He believes that this will decrease boating accidents and prevent the 'speed race' emerging among waterbike manufacturers.
