Washington's Columbia River offers the 'best smallmouth bass fishing in the West.' This was borne out by a fishing trip to the region below the McNary Dam where, with the help of crackbaits, plastric grubs and worms, smallmouths were caught from their perch below 'shallow, offshore humps.'
