A couple who chartered two yachts, one in California and one in Florida, were hit with a penalty for negligence and were refused deductions and depreciation. They used their boats more for personal use and neglected certain rules for running a chartering business.

Some quarters have suggested that the yacht industry adopt the leasing arrangements which have proven to be very successful for automobiles. With yachts, leasing arrangements which combine time sharing with chartering are more feasible.
