Older coolant radiators were comparable to the concept of baking potatoes wherein aluminum nails were nailed through them for faster heat conduction. This method, which caused very hot engine surfaces in bikes, has been improved on with the use of a pair of tanks that allow higher coolant flow.

Manufacturers are decreasing the size of moving parts in motorcycles. Metal parts can become smaller so that revolutions per minute can be increased, but technologies such as oil-jet cooling of metal pistons may be required.

A one-stroke engine would be comparable to a gun. Although it packs a lot of power and is simple, its lifetime is shorter. It also lacks amenities enjoyed by ordinary piston engines, such as cooling and lubrication.
