Article Abstract:
The murders of two young female hikers in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia in May 1996 shocked backpackers across the US. While the risk of being a violent crime victim in the backcountry is still exceedingly small, some common sense advice to avoid being a crime victim is included.

A fee for all: legislators get creative in the search for new ways to fund parks
Article Abstract:
Federal recreation areas are increasing entrance fees as much as 100% and hiking charges for cabins, parking and campgrounds. A more controversial proposal is an excise tax on backpacks, mountain bikes and other outdoor gear to support 'non-game' wildlife management.
