The do's and donEts of hiking to make it a pleasant one are- do plan to stop often to drink, do pack a snack even if the route is only an hour, don't take a special training program, don't buy a pair of heavy hiking boots. The essential items that are required for hiking are water and snacks, lightweight rain jacket, fleece jacket, flashlight with spare batteries, guidebook/map and first aid kit.
