The sprint races at the US Olympic track-and-field trials were dominated by Dennis Mitchell and Michael Johnson. Johnson won the 400-meter race and set a world record in the 200-meters; meanwhile, Mitchell's victory in the 100-meters earned him a spot on the US Olympic team for the third time.

The 1996 US Olympic track and field trials featured a record-breaking performance in the mens 200-meter race by Michael Johnson. Despite having been the world's best 200-meter runner, Johnson had been unable to set a world record in the event, but his time of 19:66 is the new world standard.

The 1996 Olympic Women's Marathon was won for the first time by an African woman, Fatuma Roba of Ethiopia. Roba took advantage of ideal weather conditions to defeat Russia's Valentina Yegorova and Japan's Yuko Arimori, who had finished first and second respectively at the 1992 Olympic Games.
