Running during the summer months can often lead to heat stress and stroke, and the best way to prevent this is by drinking plenty of water. Sweating helps cool the body, but it dehydrates, so extra water should be consumed before long runs. A sport drink recipe is included.

Marathon runner Derek Clayton was able to run faster than others who had a higher maximum oxygen intake, because he ran more efficiently. In his unusual style called the 'Clayton shuffle,' he stayed lower to the ground and moved his center of gravity much less.

Research into exercise technique by the University of Vermont discovered a 15-minute workout that was very effective. The exercise, dubbed the '40-20 at 110 percent,' improved the heart rate, oxygen consumption, and anaerobic energy production.
