Muscle activation and the slow component rise in oxygen uptake during cycling
Article Abstract:
This study uses magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the relationship between muscle use and progressive increases in oxygen consumption during intense cycling. Results indicate that muscle activation during intense exercise is associated with increases in oxygen uptake due to motor unit stimulation and higher energy demands.

Endurance training reduces end-exercise VO2 and muscle use during submaximal cycling
Article Abstract:
An investigation to trace the effects of 4 week of endurance training on end-exercise VO2 and muscle use reveals, a significant reduction in end-exercise VO2, due to an attenuated Vo2 slow component. The results suggest that the relative metabolic stress of the vastus lateralis was reduced after training.

Effects of diet and exercise on the density and composition of the fat-free mass in obese women
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that there is no change in the density of fat-free mass when weight loss is induced by diet or diet and exercise. Results are based on a study of seventy four obese women; topics include body composition, diet and exercise regimes, and water and mineral fractions of the fat-free mass.
