A backpacker spent a week alone in Alaska's Lake Clark National Park, determined to have the kind of experience that turns a novice into an expert. Lonely and afraid, he spent more time watching for bears than enjoying the spectacular scenery. He plans to make the trip again in about five years.

A man camped near the Noatak River in Alaska describes an encounter he had with a pack of wolves. He spotted a group of about a dozen coming towards his campsite. Although he tried to stifle his fear, warnings from local Eskimos caused him to confront the scout wolf, making the pack go away.
