Familial risk ratios for high and low physical fitness levels in the Canadian population

Article Abstract:

Familial risk ratios have been considered for both low and high physical fitness levels in the Canadian population. The subjects numbered 11,680 and were from 4,144 nuclear families of the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey. It was found that significant familial risk for being fit or unfit exists in the Canadian population. The pattern of standardized risk ratios, adjusted for age and sex, indicates that the familial risk for indicators of flexibility and strength may be the result, in part, of genetic factors. The shared family environment is largely the important factor in the familial risk for physical working capacity at a heart rate of 150 beats/min (PWC(sub.150)).

A polymorphism in the alpha(sub 2a)-adenoreceptor gene and endurance athlete status

Article Abstract:

The alpha 2a-adrenoreceptor gene shows a weak association with high levels of endurance in athletes. Variation in this gene or a location near it may be a significant factor in athletes' abilities to maintain an endurance training regimen designed to produce maximal aerobic power.

Genome-wide linkage scan for physical activity levels in the Quebec family study

Article Abstract:

Research indicates linkage of physical inactivity to chromosome 2p22-p16 and suggestive linkages for other types of activities. Data point out that several chromosomal regions contain genes that either influence physically active or sedentary.
