The Family Radio Service line of marine radios developed by the FCC enables boaters to communicate with friends on land. They may be useful in emergency situations requiring technical assistance from land. Higher quality FRS radios usually have at least 14 channels and a maximum of 38 talk groups.

The detection of electrical faults in boats necessitates the use of electronic equipment and basic electrical techniques. A multimeter tests for voltage, defective circuits and the voltage of the battery. A review of the periodic changes in the equipment provides a clue on the problem.
