Fearless
Article Abstract:
Swimming champion Jenny Thompson's ability to fearlessly explore new techniques to help her improve her swimming has made her win five Olympic gold medals. As a college freshman at Stanford in 1991, Thompson was trained by a triangle of innovative coaches, namely, Richard Quick, Ross Gerry and Bill Boomer. Unlike other successful swimmers, the three coaches marvelled at Thompson's open-mindedness which enabled her to freely explore her curiosity about her body's relationship to the water. Thompson regarded the water not as an adversary but as her ally and a medium to work with.

Save your shoulders!
Article Abstract:
Shoulder pain and injury should never be regarded as a part of swimming although the sport involves hours after hours of stroking. By improving one's stroke technique, adopting a modified stretching regimen and lifting weights, shoulder injuries can be easily and completely avoided by swimmers. Some of the swimming techniques that guarantee against shoulder pain or injury are getting one's hips up in the water, rolling with the water instead of swimming flat, and using one's hips and stomach muscles to take the strain off the shoulders.
