Trout fishermen can be baffled when trying to choose among more than 5,000 flies for trout. Selecting the proper fly involves the water, the trout's diet and other factors. Several effective flies, such as the Ant Pattern, are discussed.

Most trout strike at three major fly groups: stone flies, caddis flies and mayflies. By observing which flies trout are feeding on and matching the lures as closely as possible, fly fishers can maximize chances for a big strike.
