Article Abstract:
The US champions in women's tennis since the Open era began in 1968 are many however there are many teenagers making major statements on the women's tour and none of them are American. Many people are concerned that American girls lack the drive needed to succeed at the game's highest levels and the idea is for them to get a sense of what they are up against, particularly Eastern Europeans, who are devoting themselves to tennis in early life.

Does anyone understand the pro rankings?
Article Abstract:
The tennis ranking system has received much criticism despite its relative accuracy. The ATP's Best 14 system has been criticized for discouraging top players from playing in all tour events to protect their rankings. Critics also assert that it does not reflect players' real performance in a tournament year.

Capriati takes the first step back

Tennis player Jennifer Capriati reached the quarterfinals of the Faber Grand Prix tournament in Essen, Germany, where she lost to Jana Novotna. Capriati's short stint in the tournament marks her return to competitive tennis after a long layoff caused by her disillusionment with the sport.
