Rice was a famous sportswriter during the 1920's and 1930's In his 53-year career, he wrote an estimated 67,000,000 words. He was editor of the American Golfer for 10 years and helped Bob Jones and Clifford Roberts start the first Masters in Augusta, GA, suggesting a date at the end of spring training to get the most reporters.
