Reducing turnover of new hires
Article Abstract:
Businesses can reduce short-term resignations among new employees through mentoring, an assimilation system that addresses new employee needs and eases their transition into the workplace. The objective of the system should be to provide information and guidance to all new employees rather than singling out a select few. Among the benefits to the employer are: enhanced productivity, rapid identification of the employee with the firm, improved loyalty and commitment, direction of energies to performance-related activities, rapid learning and growth, and understanding of performance criteria. Survey research in Fortune 500 corporations indicates that the selected mentor should be a peer of the employee with a similar academic and work background. Mentoring falls into three phases: (1) before the employee arrives, (2) the first two weeks of employment, and (3) after two weeks.

Nuclear Arms: One Leg Running, One Leg Walking
Article Abstract:
Charts show trends in the nuclear race since 1970. Missiles, war heads, megatonnage and throw-weight are compared, giving United States and NATO strengths and Russian and Warsaw Pact strengths. Russian nuclear arms have been expanding at a much greater pace than that of the United States and NATO. These charts underscore the greater need for arms control talks to continue.
