Group cohesion and self-handicapping in female and male athletes
Article Abstract:
A study of self-handicapping among female and male elite athletes found that female athletes reported a greater number of disruptions and that the degree of a group's cohesiveness correlated positively with the tendency of those prone to self-handicap to proactively perceive impediments. The study looked at 144 female athletes (median age 18.51) and 101 male athletes (median age 19.92) in a variety of sports. The females were more prone to identify sport problems, physical state, and family problems as interfering handicaps.
