High altitude pulmonary edema
Article Abstract:
High altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) is characterized by fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness, and insomnia, and is usually preceded by acute mountain sickness. The most prominent factors in causing HAPE are individual susceptibility, altitude, speed and mode of ascent. If a medical facility is available, supplemental oxygen is preferred treatment; if not, descent is recommended. When neither of those are options, nifedipine is a reliable treatment until descent is possible.

An ultracyclist with pulmonary edema during the bicycle race across America
Article Abstract:
The case of 38-year-old cyclist in the Bicycle Race Across America is presented, who suffered from severe pulmonary edema while cycling at a height of 2380 m on the fourth day of the race. It is hypothesized that his excessive daily sodium intake during the course of the race likely led to an expanded extracelluar volume, increased hydrostatic pressure and decreased oncotic pressure.

Do changes in lung function predict high-altitude pulmonary edema at an early stage?
Article Abstract:
The symptoms and signs of high-altitude illness, pulmonary function, and echocardiography were analyzed in unacclimatized mountaineers ascending rapidly to high altitude. It is concluded that changes in pulmonary function after rapid ascent to high altitude were consistent with interstitial fluid accumulation, but were not related to changes in pulmonary artery pressure.
