Article Abstract:
Haggard et al.'s criticisms of the contention that Korea benefitted economically from Japanese occupation during World War II are not convincing. Regardless of the cruelty of Japanese rule and the humiliation it inflicted on Koreans, agriculture flourished during that time because of the insistence of the Japanese on irrigation and agricultural innovations. Furthermore, the seeds of Korean capitalism were sown by the Japanese.
