The Boone and Crockett Club's antler-measurement system for scoring deer is best learned by scoring mounted trophy deer. Scoring ability of 15 seconds or less approximates the time a hunter needs to decide to shoot in the field.

Deer shed their antlers each winter. The location of dropped antlers provides clues as to where bucks might be found the following fall. Late spring, before the growth of heavy underbrush, is a good time to search for antlers.
