Article Abstract:
Two winning entries in a design contest for a training sailboat are described. The first place winner, designed by Peter Noble, stresses the buoyancy and stability needed by a safe boat. The runner-up, designed by Francois Mansuy and Jean Lorre, is more oriented toward performance.

The marine core

The use of sandwich technology in the construction of sailboat hulls offers tensile strength and light weight. The technology uses four types of core material: end-grain balsa, cross-linked polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) foam, non-cross-linked PVC foam and honeycombs.

Nick Nicholson developed a keen interest in sailing during his freshman year in college, and has been an editor of the Practical Sailor magazine. He resigned from his job in 1990 to work full-time on his boat called Calypso which took 10 years to finish.
