Intestinal permeability in runners in the 1996 Chicago marathon
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the effects of prolonged exercise and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ingestion on intestinal permeabilityduring the first 5 hours following a marathon running competition are discussed. The conclusion was that gastrointestinal permeability and possible GI sumptoms result from ibuprofen use during prolonged exercise, and that such exercise alone can lead to GI symptoms.

Voluntary dehydration in runners despite favorable conditions for fluid intake
Article Abstract:
The relationship between runners' perceptions of fluid needs and drinking behavior under conditions of compensable heat stress is investigated. The study carried out under optimal conditions proved that athletes were not in a position to assess their individual fluid intake requirement, for body replenishment under dehydrated conditions.

Effects of exercise intensity on active and passive glucose absorption
Article Abstract:
The effect of prolonged treadmill exercise in a cool (22 degrees Celsius) environment and increase in exercise intensities on active and passive absorption of glucose is discussed. It is found that both active and passive intestinal absorption of glucose are reduced during prolonged exercise at 70% V[O.sub.2max].
