Auto racing was 50 years old but perhaps at its lowest point when Sport began publishing in 1946. In the following 50 years, custom-built tracks, driving talent, automotive technology and television coverage transformed the sport into the realm of major popularity and big money.

Article Abstract:
Automobile racing has been popular as long as automobiles have existed. The auto manufacturers have used the races as both marketing tools and technical exercises. Much of the technology for consumer cars, from rearview mirrors to disc brakes, began on the race tracks.
